Much-Loved Island Character Passes Away

st marys from above 2Another much-loved islands’ character, Lambert Perry, has passed away.

Lambert first came to Scilly in the 1940s for a short break and he liked the islands so much he decided to stay. He worked in agriculture until 1973 when he started his 20-year stint on the dustcarts.

Both islanders and visitors knew him for his friendly disposition, chatting with him as he did the rounds in the dustcart, accompanied for 13 years by his dog Scamp.

When Mr Perry retired, Cllr Marian Bennett wrote Mr Perry a poem, which included the line, “You make my day a whole lot brighter.”

Last night, Marian said, “Lambert Perry epitomised everything good about working in the public domain. He was always smiling and always had the priority of having the job done well.”

Police were called to his Ennor Close home on Thursday morning by the islands’ paramedic. Sergeant Colin Taylor says there were no suspicious circumstances and officers on the mainland have been in contact with Mr Perry’s next of kin.
