A talented young island cricketer is heading off to Thailand today for 10 days of specialist coaching by former England cricketer Ian Pont, after being selected for the Cornwall under 12s team.

Ethan Badcock, who is 11 years old, was chosen for the final 14 after all clubs in the county submitted their best players.

He’ll be playing matches over the summer season and will also be joining the tour of South Africa next February. Ethan will need to raise the money beforehand to cover his expenses for the trip.

Ethan said transport issues are a big problem and can affect his training schedule. The team gets together on the mainland every Tuesday, but Ethan won’t be able to attend every session.

Instead he’ll be training with dad Joe at the sports hall when he can’t travel.

Ethan had been training hard over winter and wasn’t nervous about the trials. And he says he’s looking forward to the coaching trip to Thailand, which will include lots of cricket but also a bit of time off to see some local temples.
