Organisers Pleased With Walk Scilly

walkers on strandOrganisers of the Walk Scilly festival are pleased with how it went, but feel more needs to be done to help the event reach its potential.

Amanda Pender from the Islands Partnership says her organisation took up the reins in mid January to make sure it happened.

But she says the timing and arrangement of the next Walk Scilly in 2014 will be for the tourism industry on the islands to decide.

60 people attended the opening reception last Saturday at St Mary’s Hall Hotel.

Over the seven days of the festival, 273 individual walks were taken.

It’s unclear whether the event, designed to kick-start the season, brought in visitors to the extent of previous years. St Agnes boatman and member of the partnership John Peacock says a ‘handful’ of people were staying on the island during the event and he says it’s most likely because Easter was early.

He’s unclear who was using his boats just because of the festival, but says he is positive that Walk Scilly helps St Agnes businesses.

Amanda says 30 people travelled to the Turks Head on the supper boat on Thursday night. And she says that more could be achieved if work was done to market the event to the fullest extent possible.
