Family doctors in Scilly and Cornwall will take responsibility for buying almost all local health services from Monday.

NHS Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group will be responsible for around £700 million of health service budget and they’ll deal with acute hospital care, mental health and children’s care.

The changes are said to give clinicians more power to improve NHS services.

Scilly will be part of the South Kerrier area, alongside another nine regions in Cornwall.

Dr Francis Old from the Helston medical practice, who run St Mary’s Health Centre, will represent South Kerrier on the new board.

Managing director Joy Youart says they will commission high quality services, which reflect the community’s needs and support people to lead healthier and more independent lives.

“Helping people to stay well and ensuring they get excellent care when they are ill is at the heart of our vision,” she says.

A People’s Commissioning Board will give the public the opportunity to be directly involved in the commissioning of health and social care services for their community.
