First Gigs Arriving In Scilly For Championships

Gig loading on scillonian 2013The first gigs for the 24th World Pilot Gig Championships were transported to the islands yesterday.

Newquay’s ‘Spy’ and Caradon’s ‘Ann Glanville’ were loaded onto the Scillonian III for her first sailing of the new season.

Gigs owned by the Falmouth and Helford gig-rowing clubs have also made the 47-nautical mile journey from Penzance to St Mary’s on the Gry Maritha this week.

More than 100 gigs will be transported by the Steamship Company, on board both boats, in time for the event over the first Bank Holiday in May.

Chairman of the championships committee, Rick Persich, says he now expects 132 gigs to enter this year’s event, although the sport’s official website has predicted 138 boats will be used, so there could be more, he says.

Rick says he is grateful to the Steamship Company for their sponsorship and support of the competition. Their assistance has helped the championships to grow into such a high profile, international event, he says

The company is offering special travel rates to competitors and provides an extra sailing from Penzance to St Mary’s on the Friday and Monday of the competition.
