Youth Parliament Member Wants To Promote Positive Image Of Scilly’s Youngsters

maddie sibleyScilly’s Member of the Youth Parliament joined sixty of her mainland counterparts in Newquay last weekend in a media-training and idea-exchange residential session.

Following the workshops, 15-year-old Maddie Sibley says she’ll be working to ensure that a positive image of young people on the islands is portrayed.

Maddie says there can be a tendency in the media to associate all young people with any youngster who has been in trouble and this can be a problem in a close-knit community.

She’s working on a newsletter to promote some of the achievements of local children, such as sporting or Duke of Edinburgh award successes. She wants young people to approach her with their ideas, which could form the basis of her next campaign.

Maddie says two issues are of particular concern to younger islanders; transport links and finding a place, which they can call their own.

She says young people here want somewhere to relax with friends in the evening without being ‘kicked out’ by adults or the police for being too noisy.
