Co-op Urging Islanders To Help Shape The Business

coop signThe Co-operative is calling for customers on the islands to stand for election on the local area committee.

There are five vacant seats on the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly committee and any member of the Co-op in the area is eligible to nominate themselves if they have traded with the business throughout 2012.

The level of representation of islanders within the chain, which has a supermarket monopoly in Scilly, has been questioned recently. Garrison resident Alan Davis stood for election as the islands’ member on the regional board last year but was unsuccessful.

He has called for a dedicated member on the Co-op panel because of the store’s commercial dominance here and unique supply issues.

Scilly instead shares a member with the mainland and Co-op manager, Paul Westaway, from Penzance recently won the seat.

Elected members are rewarded with a fee for their time, and they need to attend one meeting a month. At those sessions they feedback their experiences of the business and help to select community groups to receive funding.

Nominations are open until 13 May 2013. To find out more, email or call 01884 266 892.
