The Five Islands School

Music pupils from the Five Islands School have brought back eight trophies from the annual Cornwall Music Festival in Truro.

Eight primary and eight secondary school children accompanied teachers Jane Pender and Sara Symons for the 4-day event last week.

It was the first festival experience for over half the instrumentalists and all were involved in solo, duet and ensemble classes.

They performed and were scored against schools from around Cornwall.

Zoe Hitchens was the star pupil in the Grade 5 & 6 woodwind solo class. She was awarded the Westcountry Music Trophy for her performance of Rachmaninoff on her clarinet.

Zoe achieved an outstanding 92 marks. Anything over 89 is classed as a performance of the highest standard, both technically and artistically.

She says a lot of hard work has gone into preparing for the festival, including practicing until 7.30pm in the evenings every Monday since Christmas.

Zoe says her interest in music has grown since she first took up the clarinet and she’s considering continuing with music at A-Level.

Pippa Grossett won in clarinet solo. It was Pippa’s sixth time at the festival but she still found it as nerve wracking as the first time. The atmosphere is very different from performing in front of friends and family, she says, and you can tell you’re being judged seriously.

Pippa is full of praise for her teacher, Jane Pender, who says she’s proud of what the islands’ pupils achieved.
