A Tresco Estate employee has been granted British citizenship in a ceremony on St Mary’s.

It’s only the fourth time that someone has chosen to change their nationality here in Scilly since 2008.

Jaclyn Smith, who is 27, has worked on the islands for three years and lived in Britain for five years. She will now have dual South African and British citizenship and can apply for a UK passport.

Superintendent registrar Alison Gardner officiated at the ceremony, attended by some of Miss Smith’s Tresco colleagues at the temporary register office at Carn Thomas.

Sergeant Colin Taylor was asked to attend as the islands dignitary. He says he’s probably the first police sergeant in the country to have done so. He handed Jaclyn her certificate.
