Hospital Foundation Trust Representatives For Scilly Named

Councillor Richard McCarthy

Councillor Richard McCarthy

St Agnes councillor Richard McCarthy has been named as our authority’s official representative on the council of governors for the new Royal Cornwall Hospitals Foundation Trust.

This is one of five seats on the new body ring-fenced for the Trust’s key partners.

He’ll be joined by islander Steve Manning, who was elected earlier this month in a public vote, along with 10 other elected representatives and various staff and clinical appointees.

However, Richard’s appointment has highlighted some of the problems our islands have in finding enough available representatives for public bodies.

Richard was told by the Council’s administration officer Sue Pritchard, that he’ll need to resign from his position on the Health Overview and Scrutiny Committee, as this could create a conflict of interest. He’d be expected to scrutinise the services delivered by RCHT.

Similarly, there was discussion at a recent Policy and Resources meeting about whether Cllr Gordon Bilsborough could continue on that committee after being appointed a founder director of the new HealthWatch organisation on Scilly, which is funded via a grant from the Council.

The RCHT council of governors is expected to sit for the first time in April and should provide a direct link between the Trust and local communities in the region.
