Council To Employ Temporary Social Worker

town hall windows signThe Council’s director of social services says the Authority will need to bring in an agency social worker to replace the outgoing social care manager, Jonny Lawrence-Roberts, who resigned last month.

In the recent Community Services meeting, Penny Penn-Howard said Mr Lawrence-Roberts wanted to leave “earlier if possible” so an agency worker would need to be employed to fulfil the Council’s statutory duties.

That could put some ‘small’ pressure on the budgets, admitted Ms Penn-Howard, who said the authority would need to bear the extra cost of the agency fee.

She assured members that there was sufficient money in the budget and said this was likely to be only an interim arrangement for a few months although recruitment of a full time social worker could take some time.

However, council vice chair Amanda Martin questioned the submitted report, which said there were no financial implications, She said it was clear that there were.

My word Pat you’re a font of Mr Hygate’s having a party at Star Castle? Who told you? The reception or have you had an invite? And if he’s having a party, no doubt funded by the council tax payer, what’s it got to do with social workers?
Now can I ask you! if it’s alright if this argument finishes, I know that you don’t like us going on too long.

Has anyone checked to see if we already have a qualified social worker living on the islands? If so that would save travel costs, accommodation costs and the sign-on fee, and would presumably be at a lower salary than through an agency. You would also have the person available for useful work full-time whilst with an agency worker you presumably still pay whilst they are doing non-useful travelling.

I’m a retired Social Work Manager with a broad field of expertise – though my special skills are working with older people. My love of Scilly has developed over more than 40 yrs of visiting. I’d consider filling the post as a locum while the advert, interviews, and selection for a permanent person takes place. Don’t need a salary – but would need accommodation for one husband, and one dog.

Friends on St Mary’s could supply personal references, and obviously I could give you details of professional referees. Do call me on 0117 914 4099 if interested.

His house is up for tender from the Duchy of Cornwall, so I would assume that the director of finance would have to stay in a guesthouse on his visits here or work from home more often. The council will front the bill for his accommodation over here though, no doubt about it.

I have also heard that he will be staying at star castle.

Where do you get your info. Nobby? Do you work for the Council or Star Castle and if so do you make a habit of divulging information or are you just gossiping? I’ll wait and see if you’re correct and make my judgement then.

If the councillors do not recognise that his contract and terms are not value for money then these councillors are not fit for purpose. Savings should begin very close to home, right under their noses in fact.

Nobby Nobbs how true are you. So the Council pay large sums for the Director of Finance to stay here so he can sort out the Councils Finances?!

  13. LOU February 22, 2013 at 1:16 am

Nobby Nobbs You believe wrong! Do you know im begining to feel very sorry for you. You must live a very sad life that you have to come on here day in day out and moan.Life’s too short to waste on petty arguments.

    • Nobby Nobbs February 24, 2013 at 10:43 am

Would you prefer that the council are allowed to continue making decisions and spending tax payers money in secret?.

Yes I might make comment on this forum and will continue to do so until the council operate in a completely open and transparent manner, where every decision is published in large bold type in an accessible public space (perhaps a forum like this one) where the public can see what is being done in their name and with their money and, perhaps are consulted before the decision is carried out.

Unlike the current modus operandi were decisions are made in secret and, public consultation is in effect non existent and, any challenges to council decisions (The distribution of the Moorwell alp to Bant’s Carn being a point in case) are looked upon as an annoying distraction to doing what senior officers want to do behind our backs.

The council is there to represent the people but seems to look upon us as an irritant to carrying out council business.

So if you feel that my commenting on decisions being made in the peoples name with the peoples money that will have consequences for years to come are petty, I would have to disagree with you.

I believe that the council will be paying for the director of finance to stay at Star Castle (or somewhere similar) when he is on island

Just wondering what will happen to his house?? Will this be used for the temporary social worker? Or does Peter Laurence-Roberts get to somehow keep it? In which case another property will have to be found.
