HEART Holding Community Meeting Tonight

Heart of Scilly's AGM

Heart of Scilly’s AGM

The Islands’ community group HEART is giving islanders a chance to discuss issues of concern tonight.

Committee member Fran Grottick says some questions have already been submitted for the debate. The on-going waste consultation and particularly proposals to dump at Pendrathen and Porth Wreck will feature in the public questions.

Islanders have also raised issues over school pupils’ access through Old Town, local government organisation and transport issues.

Fran tells Radio Scilly she’s pleased Councillors Marian Bennett and Dudley Mumford have agreed to sit on the panel because they have both been working on travel problems recently.

Other guests include Council vice-chair Amanda Martin and Councillors Roy Duncan and Gordon Bilsborough.

Fran says all islanders are welcome and she’d like attendees to come with an open mind.

The chairman Adrian Davis will ensure that contributions are positive and that there are no personal comments. Some recent events will also be off-limits for legal reasons.

Fran says the HEART session is intended to aid communication and help better understanding.

She says HEART wants to help anyone who would like to stand for Council in the May elections and hopes around 10 people will come forward including some younger candidates.

The group will act as an ‘enabler’ she says, assisting in the paperwork required to stand.

The Question Time-style event runs from 7pm to 9pm in the Town Hall this evening.

    Well, Todd,
I would agree that problems that have existed
for years and have become deep seated will
    take a while to resolve.
However, let’s not be defeatist. We HAVE to believe that
    the Community can effect change.
Waste issues might be a good place to start. If we feel
we have not been given any meaningful input into
important choices, it is a responsibility of all of us to
alert our Councillors, and ask for their help.
    Man the Barracades!!

I have come to the conclusion. some people may have had a brilliant education as i say brainy beggers. but some of them dont seem to have much common sense.. so i think we all have got a chance of putting up for council in may. you need to know right from wrong plenty of common sense and dig deep in knowing whats whats… and be a bit noisy like me.. ha ha.

I would just like to say that i went to the HEART meeting.
I would like to thank the councilors who attented and appreciate what they are trying to do especially councilor Martin.it is a good start that they are willing to meet and discuss things with the public… but some councilors have still got a way to go. i have got alot of respect for the ones who have appoligsed for the way things have been handled over the years. for some its been a steep learning curve. but i still think their are some councilors who are in denial and feel that there’s been nothing amiss.. these are the ones who need to take a long hard look at themselfes !! if they want to be voted in again

HEART would like to thank our Panel for their time and
contributions and thanks ,too, to all who attended.
We feel the evening was useful and informative, and thanks also to those who sent in their questions.
We are grateful to Radio Scilly for their help in publicising the
event, and to those who kindly displayed the posters.
