Plan To Convert Rams Valley B&B Accepted

hugh town from garrisonAnother bed and breakfast property on St Mary’s is following the trend of changing to self-catering.

Planners have given permission for Haycock’s in Rams Valley to be converted into residential accommodation, with a self-catering annexe.

The new owners, Mr and Mrs Thomas, has have been running ‘The Lookout’ B&B at Porthcressa for nine years, say they find the work increasingly demanding as they are both in their 70s.

They say they would like to make life easier while still earning an income.

Planning officer, Harriet Bowen, said in her report that there has been a gradual decrease in B&B accommodation on the islands, while the self-catering sector was increasing. That is in line with the demand from visitors.

She said there would be no external alterations to the property and recommended it for approval, subject to a restriction to use the first floor accommodation for visitors only.

The plan was accepted by councillors.
