Announcement On New School Head Expected Later This Month

The chairman of governors of the Five Islands School says he hopes to announce who is the new head teacher on Friday the 21st of February.

Ben Julian says four, “outstanding” candidates, who each have, “huge amounts to offer the school” have been shortlisted from eleven applicants using a “rigorous and positive” shortlisting meeting.

Ben says he’s been told that receiving so many applications is very good.

He says a “challenging” interview procedure will run from the 18th to the 21st of February.

Ben has previously told us that the publicity surrounding the school after the suspension and resignation of former head teacher Bryce Wilby could attract potential applicants who welcome a challenge.

Last year, the National Association of Head Teachers’ regional spokesman, Steve Cleverley, told Radio Scilly that his union intended to place an advisory notice for any members intending to apply for the headship, following the controversy.

Steve and the NAHT press office declined the chance to comment further.

Yes Nobby, the Chairman of Governors may have four “outstanding” candidates who will now be doing lots of digging around for information, so it doesn’t follow that an appointment will be made on 21st Feb, especially as the headteachers’ union has put out a warning about the job.

The candidates may be outstanding on paper, but they do have to turn up and see things for themselves, and they may not have fully thought through the whole business of moving, maybe with their family; and of course they may even turn the job down!

“Ben has previously told us that the publicity surrounding the school after the suspension and resignation of former head teacher Bryce Wilby could attract potential applicants who welcome a challenge.”

By challenge does he mean ‘career suicide’?

    Off island school bases
    Mundersley
    A mutinous staff
    Academy status
And an LEA about to lose its cash cow

Personally I wish who ever gets the job the best of luck, because they’re going to need it in hanger fulls.
