Library Opening Delayed By Shelving

The Porthcressa Regeneration project should be completed by the end of March, if there are no more delays caused by fog.

Diana Mompoloki has told councillors that poor visibility had disrupted workers’ travel, particularly on Mondays and Fridays. Heavy rain had also delayed some of the development.

Councillor Amanda Martin told the planning meeting that she was disappointed that the new library had not opened before Christmas, as had been proposed.

She was told that the delays in opening the library recently had just been down to sourcing shelving for the facility. Amanda felt that book housing would be an integral part of the project and Cllr Gaz O’ Neill added that he felt that shelves were an important part of a library, like books.

Diana explained that shelves had been included in the plans but the librarians didn’t like the chosen book casings and they had requested more expensive alternatives, which Diana referred to as, “shelving plus”.

The Extended Schools budget, which normally funds pupils’ educational trips and extra curricular activities, will pay for the new shelves.

Councillor Amanda Martin wasn’t pleased that, despite finding a grant, a more extravagant option for superior shelving had been found when the council should be watching expenditure.
