Scilly’s police sergeant has welcomed the appointment of the new chief constable of the force.

Shaun Sawyer will take the top police job in the Devon and Cornwall police force, beating four other candidates. The appointment is subject to confirmation by the police and crime panel in early February.

Mr Sawyer has been filling-in temporarily since former chief, Stephen Otter, left in March 2012.

On his twitter page, Sergeant Colin Taylor offered Mr Sawyer congratulations ‘on behalf of Scilly’ and added, “we are only a short flight away, sir.”

Shaun Sawyer began his police career in 1986 in the Met and later served as head of counter-terrorism within Scotland Yard. He joined the Devon and Cornwall force as deputy chief constable in April 2010.
