The islands’ One Act Play Festival is set to make a return this year following last May’s inaugural event.

The competition, in which budding playwrights are asked to submit a short, one-act script, performed by the Theatre Club, was won last year by Mary Dean with her play, On the Rooftop.

Mary beat off stiff competition from five other scripts.

Organiser, Jenny Byers, says they’re hoping to run the first rounds of this year’s event on Thursday 9th and Friday 10thMay, just before the start of Art Scilly Week on the Saturday.

The final will be on the following Friday, when a combination of audience and judges’ votes will find the winner.

They’ll receive the Shirley Smith Trophy, in memory of the former treasurer of Theatre Club who died suddenly last year.

Jenny says it’s unlikely that the scripts will need to be in so early this year although she’s still keen to hear from anyone who’s thinking of submitting a play.

She’s hoping to bring back professional scriptwriter Paul Dodgson as a judge, who will also be running workshops with Lifelong Learning while he’s here.

A question mark remains over the venue. Jenny says they’re waiting to hear about the dates for the Town Hall refurbishment but says they have alternatives available, including possibly running the festival on Holgate’s Green.

Any local businesses that want to sponsor the event by offering up a prize should contact Jenny on 422663 as soon as possible so they can be included in the publicity material.
