st marys from above 2A former islands’ restaurateurs lost his battle with cancer yesterday.

Rex Akred was 68 and had been in a hospice in Poole, Dorset for the past six weeks.

He was born in Norfolk and left the region when he was 19.

In 1989, Rex took on the Corner House Restaurant in Hugh Town with his then wife Doreen. He came to know Scilly because of Doreen’s connections here, as her aunt and uncle used to operate the New Inn on Tresco.

Some islanders will remember Rex for his work as a Council gardener.

The couple split up 12 years ago, but Rex returned each year until 2011, when his health made travel difficult.

Rex was a keen member of the shooting club and often attended when he was on holiday.

His funeral is likely to be in Dorset but no details are available at the moment.
