Hot on the heels of the St Mary’s harbour Christmas Eve swim, St Martin’s residents and visitors have organised their own seasonal challenge.

The ‘Lagoon of Doom’ Bog Race was held at the lake on St Martin’s campsite on Boxing Day in wet and windy conditions, although this didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the hardy souls who took part.

The race attracted a large turnout of ‘Mud Runners’ who raced in pairs through a timed circuit comprising 3 legs; the ‘Tap to the Terrace Dash’ (wading and swimming through the campsite lagoon), the ‘Arm Aching Kayak Sprint’ (raced along the length of the lagoon) and the ‘Wall to Finish Wade’ (through deep water and mud and dash through the finishing line).

There were a various categories of competition and all competitors received a medal, before moving on to the relative warmth of the hotel swimming pool, courtesy of Keith Bradford.

Winning teams were:

  • Fastest Time (Joint Winners) – Ben & Jack Gillett-Jason & Josh Poat
  • Mixed Adult Team – Phil & Izzie Hastie
  • Mixed Offspring Team – Sophie Poat & Tom Dunne
  • Veteran Father & Son Team – Keith & Tean Bradford
