Lanterns Join Scilly’s Walking Nativity

The annual St Mary’s Walking Nativity took place last night.

Islanders playing the role of Joseph and Mary walked through Hugh Town accompanied by characters from the nativity story.

The party stopped at the Mermaid, Atlantic Inn and Bishop to be told there was, “no room at the inn” and paused for readings from Canon Paul Miller.

This year there was a new addition to the event. Groups of youngsters have been making paper lanterns since the start of the month.

There was uncertainty whether they would be able to carry them through the town because of rain but the showers held off in the end.

Organiser Rose Didlick says the event has been a big success with over 40 youngsters taking part.

She says there was a range of lantern styles made, including stars, angels, candles, Christmas trees and snowmen.

Rose says she’s not sure yet whether the lanterns will feature next year but there is interest in more of the sessions and even one at Easter.
