Land’s End Airport To Close Until Christmas

After just one day of flying, which followed three days of closure because of waterlogging last week, Land’s End airport is closed again.

And this time Steamship Company bosses have decided to keep it closed up to, and including, Christmas Eve.

This decision follows the recent spells of prolonged heavy rain, which have impacted on operations at Land’s End.

A Skybus spokesman say the decision has been made now to assist passengers with their Christmas travel plans.

Between 1st November and 24th December there are 46 days on which Lands End Airport should have been open. In practice the airport did not or will not open on 14 of them, and was partially closed for another 6, according to figures I obtained from the National Air Traffic Service.
A 43% chance of cancellation or disruption is just simply not good enough. Scilly has got to pull together to make its collective voice heard in support of reliable, affordable year-round transport links to the mainland.

Notwithstanding the fact that [insert figure here] % of statistics are made up on the spot, we have had a reasonable amount of bad weather this month, it’s not going to be like that every month is it?

Given that it has hardly stopped raining for the last six weeks and that large parts of the country, particularly the South West, have suffered flooding as a result then disruption is to be expected. Skybus have done all they can to make up for the dreadful weather, and as far as I can recall there were very few days that they didn’t fly at all, even if flights were diverted to Newquay. To say that there is a 43% chance of cancellation is quite simply untrue and sensationalist.

And the stupid thing is Skybus make you drive all the way through Penzance to lands end to get the shuttle bus that drives all the way back through Penzance to get to Newquay.
If you ask to be picked up from Penzance they say ‘no’?

Are you sure about that Nobby? I was recently diverted via Newquay and was given the option of being picked up at Land’s End, in Penzance or even making my own way to Newquay if it was easier for me. I opted to be picked up in Penzance…
