Historic Forged Coins To Go On Display In Scilly

Isles of Scilly Museum

A haul of historic forged coins found last summer on Tresco will be put on display next season at the Isles of Scilly museum.

A visitor found seven coins over the course of a week near Cromwell’s Castle.

The find appeared to be money from the reign of Edward VI, which started in 1547.

Curator Amanda Martin felt the coins were poor quality and on further investigation, found that they were fakes, but from that period.

Now, after conservation work to stabilise them has been completed, the coins will be returned to Scilly for everyone to see.

Amanda says they’re not great forgeries and when you look closely you can see that they are fake.

And she thinks that there may be more coins to be found in the area from a range of periods.
