Bat Group Offering Roosting Boxes

The islands’ Bat Group wants to hear from householders who would like to put up a bat box.

The group have around twenty of the wooden boxes around St Mary’s but they are decaying, says chairman, Mike Gurr.

Now composite concrete ones are being supplied, which last longer and prove warmer for the bats.

Mike says he would like to offer them to willing hosts.

The boxes are also used when bats have to be moved or rehoused after they’ve have been found in a property about to undergo building work.

And the bat boxes make it easier to study the bats, says Mike.

Mike is happy to come the house and help suggest a good location, particularly out of the reach of cats, which are the small mammals’ only predators on Scilly.
