Council Tender Archaeological Service After Failing To Recruit

The Council is to set up an external contract for archaeological services after being unable to fill a part time vacancy on the islands.

They’ve run two unsuccessful recruitment campaigns for the combined job of Planning Archaeologist and Heritage At Risk Adviser and have decided to take the advice of English Heritage, who recommended setting up an external agreement instead.

Planning officer Harriet Bowen said the role provides advice to the planning department about the potential impact of developments and monitors any work being done to ensure archaeological sites aren’t damaged.

They also give guidance on how to protect ancient monuments and heritage assets in the local area.

The duties are statutory and form part of the planning process in many cases.

Councillors at yesterday’s Full Council meeting voted in favour of putting the service out to tender.
