Kernow Confirmed As New Health Commissioning Group

St Mary’s Hospital

Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group has been confirmed officially today as the future commissioner of most health services in Scilly and Cornwall.

It means they will fully take control of the commissioning of hospitals, community services, mental health and children’s services from next April, but has to produce a detailed financial plan before then.

The new group will replace the Primary Care Trust and will be responsible for buying health services on behalf of local people.

Their annual regional budget will be £700 million.

Under the new system, GPs will have more say in what happens in their areas. The group is chaired by St Ives GP Colin Philip who says it has been a long and complex process.

Scilly will be part of the South Kerrier area under the new arrangements and that area will sit alongside another nine regions in Cornwall.

Dr Francis Old from the Helston medical practice who run St Mary’s Health Centre, will represent South Kerrier on the new board.
