Core Samples Taken Ahead Of Resurfacing

You may have seen a team drilling holes in the road around St Mary’s over the weekend.

Two engineers spent two days taking core samples to identify the depth of the road surface and determine the road quality ahead of proposed resurfacing next summer.

To make the most of the equipment that will be brought over to resurface the airport runway, roads around the town are likely to be improved at the same time.

Katie Ward of URS was drilling down to remove samples. She said most cores were around 5cm in depth although some were ‘surprisingly thin.’

She said that’s not a problem as we don’t have large trucks on the roads here, that would require a thicker surface.

All of the holes drilled have now been filled.
