Scilly’s Children’s Centre Rated Highly In Ofsted Report

The Isles of Scilly Sure Start Children’s Centre has been rated as ‘good’ overall following an Ofsted inspection last month.

Two inspectors visited Scilly on 2nd and 3rd October and met with staff, parents and children.

The centre at Carn Thomas, with bases on the off-islands, was said to provide a range of high quality programmes, activities and services, particularly for children with disabilities or additional needs.

Inspectors reported that they promote children’s learning and development and prepare them well for their next steps in life.

They added that inclusion underpins the centre’s work and the needs of families on the off islands are taken into account in service planning and development.

Leadership and management of the centre are good and inspectors said, together with the local authority, there was a strong vision, high ambitions and clear priorities for developing services.

The Ofsted report included two recommendations for areas that require improvement.

One focussed on developing services for improving the economic well being of local families.

The second was to improve the collection and use of data so that the centre’s impact could be evaluated more effectively.

David Pearson, lead member for Children’s Services said; “I’m very pleased with the contents of this inspection report, I believe it reflects the efforts of all involved in the delivery of services to young children and their families.

“It’s a true and accurate picture of services on Scilly and will help us build on areas that we know need strengthening.”
