Plans To Extend St Martin’s Retail Space Gain Approval

Plans to refurbish and extend a shop at Middle Town Barn on St Martin’s have been given the green light by planners.

Owner Ian Metcalf was also allowed to a change to an existing planning condition that restricted sales to produce grown in St Martin’s. He’ll now be able to sell meat, fish, shellfish and other produce grown or made anywhere on the Isles of Scilly.

Two St Martin’s retailers, Jonathan Smith and Steve Walder each sent letters raising concerns over the wider range of goods that would likely be stocked in the new shop, although Planning Officer Harriet Bowen said that the planning process cannot be used to restrict competition.

She recommended approval, saying the proposal would promote economic activity and allow the sale of local produce, contributing to diversification on the island.

Cllr Richard McCarthy said it was a shame that, due to the poor weather, the two St Martin’s councillors couldn’t attend the planning meeting. But said he couldn’t see any valid objections to the plans.
