Christmas Craft Market Tomorrow

The first of the islands’ Christmas fairs takes place tomorrow.

It’ll be a chance to pick up Christmas gifts from a range of St Mary’s-based craftspeople, many of whom don’t have galleries or regular outlets.

The six-hour event at the Phoenix Art Studios, organised by Oriel Hicks, has a fundraising goal. Refreshments and rental of table space to craftspeople will raise cash for an African charity founded by her daughter’s charity.

Erica Hicks set up Kiota, in Tanzania, to get shelter for young women made homeless after their parents died of AIDS. As well as being offered housing, the charity trains them in skills so they can support themselves.

Oriel says many of the craftspeople will use the event to road test their new lines and decide whether they will develop them for the next tourist season.

Doors open at 10am and the fair will run until 4pm.
