LINk4Scilly Call For More Appointments In Penzance

LINk4Scilly, the islands’ health watchdog, has called for more out patient appointments to be held in Penzance.

In an update to their Medial Travel report, presented to last Wednesday’s Shadow Health and Wellbeing board, LINk say that the greatest number of appointments are still being held at Treliske, even though West Cornwall Hospital and other clinics in Penzance are more accessible to residents of the islands.

They say with new facilities at West Cornwall, more patients from Scilly should be seen there.

However, a spokesperson for Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust says an increase in services at West Cornwall is already underway.

Claire Florey, Deputy Divisional Manager at RCHT, says the hospital is busy making plans for several services to be introduced, including adult and children’s audiology, gynaecology and an increased ophthalmology service.

Acting Matron and Surgical Unit Manager, Adrian Evans, says the hospital is also looking to see if they can increase the number of surgical procedures that take place there, with the recent introduction of an operating theatre specialising in keyhole surgery.

Being seen in Penzance means a shorter journey time, less time away from the islands and less stress, says LINk.

But patients who do need to travel to Truro are also being helped.

LINk say that Skybus have altered their flight times so patients can catch the 10am train from Penzance and return in time for the afternoon transfer to Land’s End.
