Council Meeting Will Discuss Returning Officer Role

Council Chamber at the Old Wesleyan Chapel

An extraordinary Full Council meeting has been called today so councillors can discuss the resignation of the suspended chief executive from one of his roles.

ScillyToday understands that Philip Hygate wishes to quit from his post as returning officer.

It’s an additional activity for Mr Hygate and requires him to be responsible for overseeing elections, such as the upcoming Police and Crime Commissioner vote next Thursday.

The role attracts a supplementary payment.

But documentation suggests Mr Hygate only wants to leave the post for this one election.

All councillors have been summoned to the single-item meeting, which will be held behind closed doors.

It’s nine days since Mr Hygate was suspended by the Council, as a neutral act, so allegations into his conduct can be investigated by an independent appointee, agreeable to himself and the authority.

Mr Hygate denies the allegations.

How can anyone resign for one event and then expect to be rehired?
    If you resign, you resign!
I can’t tell my boss that I’m resigning for next week but I’ll be back in the week after, that’s called taking a holiday.
Without wishing to sound cynical, I expect there is some sort of alterer political motive behind such a move.

And why does the meeting have to be held in secret (again!)
