New Chaplain To Be Installed Today

Rev Canon Paul Miller

Scilly’s new Chaplain will officially start his ministry today.

Many islanders already know Canon Paul Miller as he has worked as a locum, primarily on Tresco and Bryher, over the last 30 years. Paul, who has moved from Kent, is also familiar with island life, albeit from a larger island. He worked in a bank on Guernsey before he was ordained.

Canon Miller spent time last week meeting with parishioners on Bryher, Tresco, St Martin’s and St Agnes. He’s already familiar to many worshippers at the All Saints and St Nicholas churches as he’s served as a locum on Tresco and Bryher for around 30 years.

He’s asked for representation from all of the off-islands to be present at 11 o’clock today at the so-called ‘Institution Service.’ This is a legal process, involving the swearing of an oath to the Queen and the Bishop and is the formal recognition of a new beginning in the parish, says Paul.

The Bishop of Truro, Tim Thornton, has come over to officiate, which Paul says reaffirms the cathedral’s links to the church here on Scilly.

Lunch will be served after the service at the Church Hall, where Paul says he’ll be able to meet people. That’s one of the things he’s most looking forward to doing in Scilly, he says.

The charity shop won’t be open this afternoon.
