Firefighters Receive Unexpected Pay Increase

The islands’ firefighters have been awarded an unexpected pay increase.

Chief Fire Officer, Steve Webster, announced the pay award at last Tuesday’s General Purposes meeting and said the 1% increase had taken him completely by surprise.

Steve said the service hadn’t budgeted for it as they assumed there was a freeze on public sector pay increases, but he said the change had been agreed nationally.

He felt the estimated £2,000 extra cost could be contained within the existing budget.

Steve said airport firefighters will not get the increase as they’re employed under a different pay structure.
