Fishermen Encouraged To Apply For European FLAG Funding

The Maritime Officer is encouraging the islands’ commercial fishermen to apply for a share of £1.1m of European money.

And the man who can help you write a bid for the Fishermen’s Local Action Group fund, or FLAG, is on the islands this afternoon.

Steve Watt says the money has been made available to support the fishing industry in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Grants of up to £100,000 are being offered to fund projects such as improving the on-board conditions on boats, equipment to streamline fish handling and more energy-efficient engines.

Steve says two projects from the islands have already been submitted – new sealed ice bins for transporting fish to the mainland and a grant for a refurbished fish processing unit.

Chris Ranford, who coordinates local bids, will be at the Council offices at Porthmellon from 2pm to 5pm this afternoon and Steve says he’d encourage anyone with an idea for a project to have a chat with him.

He says the application process is fairly quick but money will need to be spent before the end of 2013.
