St Mary’s Lifeboat Makes Eleven Hour Rescue Mission

St Mary’s lifeboat, RNLB The Whiteheads, was launched at 9.30am yesterday to go to the assistance of the Newlyn-based fishing vessel, Ajax.

The boat, with 5 people on board, got into trouble with gearbox failure 28 miles west of St Mary’s.

Stuart Hitchens led the volunteer crew, took the vessel in tow and steered through the day towards Wolf Rock, where a transfer of the tow had been arranged with the Penlee lifeboat, who then towed the Ajax back to Newlyn harbour.

That happened at 7.30pm just north of the lighthouse, where the tired lifeboat crew were given some welcome servings of Kentucky Fried Chicken, brought out by Patch Harvey, coxswain of the Penlee lifeboat.

The lifeboat arrived back in St. Mary’s harbour in the teeth of a gale and torrential rain after the 11-hour shout.
