Scilly AONB Awards Money To Projects

The AONB has awarded £12,500 to local projects through their Sustainable Development Fund.

The cash will be shared between the Sailing Club, a history project on St Agnes and a survey of the landscape.

The Scillonian Sailing Club is being awarded £5,500 for significant repairs to some of their classic Redwing sailing dinghies. The aim is to restore them to a sailable condition and to enhance islanders’ boat repair skills.

In August the Redwing National Championship were hosted in Scilly and some of this cash was used to help promote the event. It’s widely felt that the event was a boost to the local economy because it brought visiting competitors into Scilly.

The Environmental Records Centre for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly will get £3,000 to record details of the natural landscape so future changes can be easily noticed.

And £4,000 will go towards making a CD which captures the history of the St Agnes Island Hall and the island itself. The recording will mix music and oral history recordings.

This archive will be available in the Island Hall for residents and visitors to access, and the Island Hall Committee will be able to sell the CDs to raise cash for the refurbishment.
