Council To Provide Funding For Talented Children

The Five Islands School

Grants are being made available by the Council to support children with special gifts or talents.

Members of the Children and Young People’s committee heard yesterday how up to £1,500 would be provided over a 12-month period to cover travel and accommodation costs for further coaching on the mainland.

Children’s services manager, Joel Williams, says several families have approached them for support in the past, mainly in areas of sport such as football, cricket and golf.

Where help has been provided, the young people have generally gone on to perform at a high standard, he said.

It is intended that the new grants will cover a wider range of areas including academic subjects and music and the individual will need to be performing at ‘County’ level or higher.

Any application will need to be supported by the school and submitted to a panel including the Lead Member for Children and Director of Children’s Services.
