Unusual History Lesson For School Pupils

GCSE history students from the Five Islands School have had expert tuition on the Garrison and Star Castle by one of the UK’s leading experts on the subject.

Allan Brodie of English Heritage has researched and written about the Tudor fortifications, and yesterday he led a party of four local 15-year-olds from around St Mary’s to bring their studies to life.

Allan offered to take the class on the trip and says it’s the first time he’s done that with school pupils although he has taken history tours for parties of all ages previously during Walk Scilly.

The pupils are studying the military context and history of the castle and Allan says his overview will be followed by more detailed study in the classroom.

The group also went to the unfinished Harry’s Walls where he explained how the project had run out of cash when the government of the day went through an austerity drive.
