Women’s Invitation Gig Weekend Starting Today

Scilly Women’s A crew earlier this year at World Pilot Gig Championships

The annual Women’s Invitation Gig Weekend starts today and organisers are confident they’ll get a full set of races in this year. Bad weather caused all rowing to be cancelled last year.

Dee Williams from St Mary’s gig club told us two crews from Newquay will be taking part, bringing their gig, Spy. They’ll be joined by rowers from Padstow, Cadgwith and Falmouth.

The women will be racing from Nut Rock this evening at 7pm and then from St. Mary’s to St. Agnes tomorrow morning at 11am. They’ll be returning in a ‘mix up’ race from St. Agnes about 3pm.

Dee says the crews from Scilly will be using the older gigs, rather than the newer boats like the Emma Louise and the Tregarthen’s, which they prefer to keep for the championships.

She said this is the last event on the calendar this year and, while it’s nice to win races, this weekend is really about having some fun.
