Opportunity To Promote Scilly To German Visitors

Around a third of overseas visitors to Cornwall come from Germany and now Scilly could benefit from Cornwall’s popularity on the continent.

It’s partly down to the interest in Cornish-born author Rosamund Pilcher. Over a hundred of her stories, set in the county, have been produced for TV there.

Now mainland businessman Niall MacDougall has distilled 20 years of his experience visiting Scilly into a Germany language tourism website promoting the islands.

Niall has been working on promoting Scilly to the German press and they encouraged a reporter from their equivalent of the Sunday Times, a paper called Welt am Sonntag, to come over and write a travel piece on the islands.

Niall says a native German speaker has written the text on the site and they’ve used a German .de web address instead of .co.uk, so it appeals more to Germans.

They’ve approach partners for the website as they want to work with businesses that can offer something special for visitors who come all the way from Germany.

And Niall says his company wants to partner with tourism groups here.

Leadership of the tourism sector in Scilly has been in flux because of the transition to the new Tourism Partnership. Once they have devised their strategy, Niall says they’d like to discuss working together.
