Unclear Whether Scilly Will Get 4G Network

Scilly’s mobile users will have to wait some time to hear whether we’ll get superfast 4G broadband through our phones.

The high-speed network is expected to allow users to watch HD videos and BBC iPlayer on their phones.

Everything Everywhere, a joint initiative by Orange and T-Mobile, will offer mobile access of around 40mbps in most areas, around 6 times faster than you can get on the fastest phone line broadband connection on St Mary’s.

But Scilly is a step behind. We’re still on second generation 2G and that’s why it’s difficult to use internet on handsets here.

EE spokesperson Lucie Smith couldn’t confirm whether the islands will be part of the 98% of the country that will have the service by the end of 2014.

She says there’ll be a roll out list soon.
