Women Represent Scilly In Newquay Gig Championships

Scilly Women’s A crew earlier this year at World Pilot Gig Championships

Two women’s crew represented the islands at the Newquay gig championships this weekend.

Ninety gigs got out on the water and the Scilly B rowers came 31st overall.

The A crew rowers made it through to the semi finals yesterday, and competed in the gig Penlee Point after borrowing boats over the weekend.

They achieved 10th place on the leaderboard.

Andrew King, who was coxing the B crew, said the conditions were hot all weekend with a freshening offshore breeze, so it was fairly flat and the last leg was a slog into the wind.

He says the course was around 18 mins long so, although our crews’ rowing standard is very good, stamina over multiple races was key.

But the rowing wasn’t without drama. There was a collision on the first mark in the A crew’s quarter final race.

They came into contact with Falmouth B and a number 5 blade was smashed. The mainland club had 10 seconds added to their time as a penalty in that race.

Andrew says it’s safe to say everyone had a great weekend and finished it off in style last night!

The A crew were David Mumford, Selena Baxter, Kristy Graham, Anna Bennett, Helen Shave, Rebecca Baldwin and Alison Douglas.

The B crew were Andrew King, Rebecca Smith, Sarah Jenkins, Dee Williams, Victoria Hitchens, Rebecca Champion and Karen Williams.
