Scilly’s Councillors Amongst Lowest Cost In UK

Our islands’ councillors have cost the ratepayer one of the lowest amounts of any Council in the UK.

All councillors in the UK are entitled to a basic allowance and the right-wing public spending watchdog and pressure group, The Taxpayers’ Alliance, today published a list of 435 UK authorities’ expenses.

We are near the bottom at 408th in the list.

Our regular councillors are entitled to £3,347 each, every year. That amount hasn’t increased in the past year and contrasts with Cornwall, where they receive £12,128.

The lowest is South Ribble, where they can claim £1,500 basic allowance and, outside London, the highest payer is Clackmannanshire Council, where members get £16,678.

Most councils offer additional allowances for special duties, like committee chairman roles.

Costs might go up when the dog starts wagging its own tail.
