Annual Football Tournament This Weekend

Scilly’s annual 6-a-side football tournament takes place on Sunday.

The event has been part of the August Bank Holiday in it’s current format for 12 years and was restarted in the 1990s after interest in the original annual tournament waned.

Last year’s champions were The Galley and regular winners, the Old Town Café, will take on a team from the Airport Buffet, Co-op, a group of off-islanders, Tregarthen’s, Dibble and Grub and The Rat Crew, which is a new team of sailing club members captained by Richard Smith.

St Mary’s Gig Club will provide food and drinks.

Howard Cole says it’s a good ‘end of summer’ event that gets the football season underway. Some teams have been training and some take it seriously.

There’s a lot of other events this weekend but Howard says he’s not worried that turnout will be affected as those who want to play football will be there.

The tournament is taking place on The Garrison and starts at 1pm on Sunday.
