Rotary Club Surprised Over Sacking Of Shelterbox Chief Executive

Tom Henderson, OBE

The Scilly Rotary Club has expressed surprise at the removal of Shelterbox founder, Tom Henderson, as chief executive of the charity.

Mr Henderson set up the charity in 2000 and was awarded an OBE for his work in 2010. Shelterbox provide emergency aid packages for disaster-stricken areas and is popular with islands’ fundraisers. Monday’s Rotary Fun Day on Holgate’s Green intends to raise cash for the cause.

Tim Guthrie from the Isles of Scilly branch of the Rotary Club, which backs the charity, said this had come as “a complete surprise.” He said they hadn’t had any information about why Mr Henderson had been removed, but also added that the charity has grown significantly in the past few years and was now “much bigger than one man.”

Tim said he was encouraged to hear that their day-to-day lifesaving operations were continuing as normal.

Press officer for ShelterBox UK, Laura Dale, said there is an on-going appeal process, which meant they could not make any further comment, but confirmed that the process of finding a new CEO had begun.

However, it’s emerged that decision wasn’t unanimous amongst the charity’s trustees. Sir John Banham has quit as he felt his board colleagues should have made Tom president.
