Steamship Company Begin Two-Year Mail Contract

The contract for mail delivery, which the Steamship Company started operating recently, will be for two years the company has announced.

Land’s End airport is being used to bring over mail by air six days a week and it should arrive on the islands before 9.30am. The return postal agreement requires mail to be there by 5.30pm. If it can’t be flown, post will be moved on the Scillonian III or the Gry Maritha.

Jeff Marston, chief executive of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company said, “Maintaining this link to the mainland is extremely important and all part of the lifeline service we provide.”

There will be no change to the inter island postal deliveries. That will continue to be transported to Tresco, Bryher, St Martin’s and St Agnes by the inter island RIB, Swift Lady.

Good on the Steamship for providing this vital service to the islands. I admit that it won’t be as smooth sailing as it was with the helicopter but let’s not forget that Skybus (and sometimes the Scillonian) have been sending our 2nd class post and bringing Parcelforce items to the islands for the past few years now… Plus, we are all going to have to live with the absense of the helicopter, it’s gone (going), move on.

It’s good to see the mail service carrying on but the quality of service will be reduced if Lands End is to be used. Everybody knows about the effects of the weather there and there are some who prefer (preferred?) to use the helicopter for that specific reason.
