Man Winched From Yacht

Rescue helicopter from RNAS Culdrose

The RNAS Culdrose rescue helicopter plucked a French yachtsman out of the water 60 miles north of us last night.

A 22 year old solo yachtsman got into trouble while sailing his 6.5m yacht on a time trial from Trinity Sur Le Mer. He activated his emergency beacon and let off a flare.

Falmouth coastguard coordinated the rescue after speaking with French authorities in the operation, which started at 7.30pm.

The man was winched to safety out of the sea in 46 knot winds at around 10pm and taken straight to Truro’s Treliske Hospital.

The yacht has been abandoned and a navigation warning has been put out for shipping.
