Fire Victim Loses Fight For Life

Porthcressa Flats

A St Mary’s woman who was rescued from a flat fire at Porthcressa ten days ago has died in hospital in Bristol

Mo Widdup passed away yesterday morning. She was 64.

Mo had been flown to Bristol’s Frenchay hospital by the Culdrose helicopter after fire crew were called to her flat in the early hours on Sunday 5th August.

Mo was being treated at the specialist hospital for burns and smoke inhalation. Her family had travelled up to see her in hospital.

Mrs Widdup was a familiar face to mainly islanders and visitors and a popular regular of the Bishop and Wolf.

Until her retirement two years ago, she worked as cleaner in the Atlantic Inn.

Chief Fire Officer Steven Webster has completed a report into the fire and that will be made available to the Police and Coroner, but there are no suspicious circumstances.
