Cricket: Annual Triangle Match

Report by Colin Daly

The annual triangle match was hosted this year by St. Agnes on Sunday 12th July.

This is a contest between three teams from St. Agnes’, St. Martin’s and Tresco/Bryher – three 20/20 matches in one day.

It is always a tense time with the weather but contrary to prognostications it did not rain until people got home, although there were some interesting skies.

Play got underway at 11am with St. Agnes v Tresco. St. Agnes’ batted first and scored a modest 99, which Tresco/Bryher polished off quite easily.

After some pasties, St. Agnes played St. Martin’s. St. Martin’s batted first and scored 159 for 7; Ben Gillet top scored with 40. Sam Hicks took a magnificent catch with one hand high to his right.

In view of the modest total scored by St. Agnes, it was felt that this was fairly safe and so it appeared until Tim Stuart and “pirate” John came in and started a run chase with some big hitting. In a tense finish St. Agnes got the required runs with a few balls to spare. Tristan Hick top scored with 41.

Finally it was St. Martin’s v Tresco/Bryher. St. Martin’s batted first again and scored 158 for 5; T. Goddard scoring 45 and Joe Morton 36.

Could Tresco score enough to win the day? Tresco set about the task but were all out for 73! Adam Morton took 4 wickets.

A special thank you was given to G. Tucker who travelled from St. Mary’s to assist in the umpiring and to the scorers who worked hard all day. So it was a three way tie and the trophy was left with St. Martin’s until next year.

Thanks were given to the caterers and all other helpers.
