Slow Start For Round The Island Race

Around 40 boats turned out for the annual Round the Island sailing race on Sunday.

The event, a highlight of the islands’ sailing calendar, involves boats heading out clockwise around St Mary’s before finishing on St Agnes.

Truan Hick told us there wasn’t a huge amount of wind at the starting line, which meant competitors got off slowly. He said the stretch near the Eastern Isles was tough for many boats because of the direction of the tide and the lack of wind. But Truan said the breeze picked up steadily during the course of the race, making the finish easier.

First boat in at St Agnes was Catatonic with Ben Hicks at the helm, in a time of 1 hour 50 min and all vessels were back by 2.30pm. Truan said there were no withdrawals during the race.

Trophies were awarded in several categories with Most Interesting Boat going to a redwing owned by James Fletcher. Truan said it was restored after being found in a shed and James had been putting the finish touches to it on the morning of the race, ready for it’s first major outing.

Truan said the competitors seemed to enjoy this year’s race and they gathered at the Turk’s Head, where the band Skaramanga was playing, before the trophies were handed out.

He thanked Alan Hartwell for running the start on the Pegasus, Rob Doux and Andrew King for recording the finish times, Mike Gurr and Keith Buchanan for the Water Taxi and the TIC, Sailing Centre and Pilchard Pit for handling the entry forms and numbers.
